How to choose the right dental compressor?

Choosing the right compressor can be a daunting task. Here are some factors to consider when selecting a dental compressor:

1.    Air quality: The quality of the air output is an important consideration when choosing a dental air compressor. Most of the dental equipment manufacturers recommend to use clean, dry and oil free air. Some are going further by specifying requested air quality according to mostly according to ISO 8573-2010, or other standards. There is one common rule: compressor should be oil-less and equipped with the dryer.

2.    Size of your practice: The size of your practice is another important factor to consider when choosing a compressor. The compressor should be able to meet the air demands of your practice. For example, if you have a large practice with multiple dental units, you will need a compressor with a higher capacity. Sure, there could be huge differences in air demand for different dental units. Consumption can start around 35l/min (@5 bar) but some systems require more than double. It is a good idea to check requirements for all connected devices as well their simultaneity of use. If the devices are not used at the same time (e.g. one dental unit is used only before noon while second is only used afternoon or evening), it is enough to calculate only with one which has higher consumption. Otherwise the sum of all consumptions has to be used, making sure there is enough air even if all devices would work simultaneously.

3.    Location: The location of your compressor is also an important factor to consider. The compressor should be installed in a clean and well-ventilated area with adequate space for maintenance and repairs. Compressor is a source of noise, so in case you need to install EKOM compressor directly in treatment or waiting room, use the version with EKOM noise reduction cabinet. It is not a good idea to install compressor in too small and not ventilated places or even into homemade boxes, as inefficient cooling will result into overheating which is shortening life of any electro-mechanical device.

4.    Reliability: The reliability of crucial equipment is another important factor to consider. One might not realise that without air, dental unit and also some other devices will not work, causing the down time of the clinic, postponed treatment for patients and ruined reputation of doctor. You should choose a reliable compressor which has a long designed life.

5.    Service availability: Availability of service (technician trained by producer) is strong decision point. All devices require regular maintenance and even most robust product can experience some technical issues over time. That is why it is crucial to have access to skilled dependable and trained technician. Good documentation and access to spare parts should be a standard. With EKOM APP you and your service man can keep the overview of all conducted installations, maintenance even repairs, knowing what and when was done. Immediate access to User Manual and service instructions is guaranteed.

6.    Legislation: Last but not least is the certification and registration. High class medical device as EKOM compressor is designed, manufactured and tested according to ISO 13485 and MRD directive. Local registrations are done where required. You can be sure your compressor is meeting valid EU requirements for medical devices.
